It is the resistance of our people and our many allies that have delayed the pipeline construction for the past several years. Under ‘Anuc niwh’it’en (Wet’suwet’en law) all Hereditary Chiefs of the five clans of the Wet’suwet’en have unanimously opposed all pipeline proposals and have not provided free, prior, and
informed consent to Coastal Gaslink to drill on unceded and surrendered Wet’suwet’en lands. They are trying to drill under the Wedzin Kwa river, the sacred headwaters that feed all of Wet’suwet’en territory and give life to our nation. The pipeline, spanning 670 kilometers, will transport fracked gas to the proposed LNG Canada processing plant, the largest single private sector infrastructure project and one of the most significant energy investments in Canadian history.
Kukpi7 Judy Wilson, Secretary-Treasurer of the Union of BC Indian Chiefs, said: “RBC is deceiving the public by claiming to be taking climate action while expanding its financing of climate-destroying fossil fuels. Climate change disproportionately impacts Indigenous peoples around the world as well as here in Canada. Until RBC stops financing fossil fuels, advertising itself as Paris Agreement-aligned is greenwashing -- and it shouldn't be tolerated. The UBCIC Chiefs Council has called on RBC to take immediate and substantive action to phase out fossil fuel financing and we will continue to hold RBC to account." https://www.stand.earth/rbc-under-investigation-climate-claims
