Indigenous News to talk about at Dinner
Petitions & more to talk about over turkey and potatoes tomorrow.
ICWA hearing turnout
With the help of many people sharing information on social media, the group Protect ICWA rallied a crowd at the Supreme Court in DC on the day of the hearing(Nov 9th).
âApproximately 60 stood in line waiting to sit inside the court to witness the oral arguments. Many sat between the Capitol and court listening to three hours of oral arguments on their headphones, and others listened to the line of speakers and songs all morning and into midday.â
Now, as we wait for a ruling we are being asked to continue to educate those in our lives about the impact of ICWA and show our support by signing and sharing the petitions. We can expect a ruling in the spring of 2023. This gives us plenty of time to show the Supreme Court that the world is watching how they rule on Brackeen v. Haaland.
Axis to stop insuring pipeline projects
âReinsurer AXIS Capital (AXS.N) said it would refuse to underwrite energy, mining and other projects that did not have the backing of local indigenous communities, in a move welcomed by campaigners as setting a new industry standard.
The decision follows years of protests from communities, particularly in the developing world, that argue their voice is often ignored when banks, insurers and investors pursue projects that can negatively impact their lives.â
This is part of a much larger trend that we can see in the insurance industry. Something that long term, the oil executives are going to have a hard time overcoming:
âInsurance is the âAchilles heelâ of the fossil-fuel industry, with the power to drive climate change progress, because projects are unlikely to attract capital if they canât get insurance.â
We have yet to see the full impact of these decisions but it is certainly promising that Indigenous & climate action voices are being heard.
Cherokee Nation delegate
âThe Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma moved a step closer on Wednesday to having a promise fulfilled from nearly 200 years ago that a delegate from the tribe be seated in Congress.â
Not only is this treaty promise incredibly important to uphold, but it is also long overdue. And we are calling on Congress to hold the vote before the end of the year. Please ask those in your life to show their support. This is a fantastic and helpful action to have your family take to amplify indigenous voices after educating them about the real history of thanksgiving on Thursday.
