I originally was going to meet my Dad for a conference, but he got elected to Tribal council, so he might not be able to make it for this one. This trip was very last minute and a bit thrown together, but my application for the conference was approved, and my hotel is booked, so I will head out there and cover it anyway. I should still be seeing some family while I am there, so overall, it’ll still be a good trip.
I have every intention of finding the vendor tables and doing my holiday shopping. I will pick up every business card I find and ask for all the websites, I promise!
Now, on another note, I came across this article by the New York Times last night. I generally try to avoid the NYT but this one caught my attention.
It made me wonder, again, how many more are out there in private collections, just waiting for descendants to understand and do the right thing. So much has and continues to be lost to theft and auction—not just artifacts and regalia but ancestors, too. Sitting in someone’s basement or hung on the wall—an anecdote in the family lore, a punchline at dinner parties—these are the kinds of stories that truly haunt me. The literal skeletons in people’s closets.
At some point, we are going to need to discuss how to tackle this. Folks are going to have to have some really hard conversations with family in order to begin assessing concrete steps to take next. I can’t tell folks where to look, it’s up to folks to begin this work within your families and communities.
This is part of what we mean by everything comes down to community.
I will be back with another check-in when I am back from Alaska.
