S1723 heads to the Senate floor
The Truth and Healing Commission on Indian Boarding School Policies in the United States Act was approved by the Committee of Indian Affairs on Wednesday.
This is a revived version of bill S2907 which was heard by committee last year. It was a bill I posted in several videos, but this is the first update I had heard about the Truth and healing commission in a few months. Now the committee has unanimously passed the Truth and Healing Commission on Indian Boarding School Policies in the United States Act, with amendments “after feedback from over 100 survivors, descendants, Tribal leaders, advocates, churches, local governments, and experts, who provided testimony for the record following last year’s hearing.” I am relieved to see the committee passed the bill, which is now headed to the Senate. The next step will be to contact our senators to direct them to support s1723.
“We are grateful to Senator Warren for reintroducing this bill and to the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs for working with us to make it even stronger,” said Deborah Parker (CEO), CEO of the National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition. “The leadership from Senator Schatz and Senator Murkowski has been crucial in making this historic bill bipartisan.”
It will be incredibly important to see this legislation passed.
No news on ICWA yet
Last Thursday came and went with no announcement on ICWA. The Supreme court issues rulings on thursdays so I will update you next week when they release their next rulings. We are all anxious together waiting for this decision. 🥲
If you haven’t had a chance yet, please take the quick actions to support ICWA:
The drawback of going viral:
So my “Be a problem” orca design has gone completely viral. It’s been reposted and shared on all of the platforms, it’s even floating around facebook. But the disappointing thing was seeing other storefronts steal my artwork and put it in their merch shops. Thankfully the Internet has responded and so many have come to help me track down the other stores and let as many people know as possible that I am the artist. Lessons have been learned including how to watermark every image in my store. I am taking the steps to make sure my work is protected going forward.
Here is the collection where you can find the now insanely viral holographic sticker:
Thank you everyone for your support! See you next week!
